Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
