Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev secured his maiden trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition final.

Medvedev, a former number one, has had a torrid period, achieving just one win at the big events and undergoing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the ATP Tour - and issues with his serve in specific - resulted in him exiting of the top ten and finally splitting with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily advanced in the past month - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents Medvedev's first championship after the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard court since March of that year.

The win also indicates he has secured twenty-one championships at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my both daughters together, so to secure a championship is particularly special," said ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child her name, because the first title I won when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six finals, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his ability to compete at the top level was concluded.

However the athlete has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform aggressively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.

The champion came back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, securing four of the final five exchanges to take the lead.

Both players swapped service breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional victory, seized the initiative to create a third set.

Moutet rescued 4 early opportunities in a competitive deciding set before the champion won the break to fifteen to serve for the match.

Fittingly, he earned the title with a point at the net area, with Moutet incapable to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
